Bolder Boulder 2008 - Statistical Analysis of Men’s Age Group Times

The Bolder Boulder is one of the largest road races in the country, with 54,000 runners in 2008. It’s a Memorial Day tradition in Colorado that grows larger each year, runners seem immune to the high entry price as they all want to be part of the hysteria. The Bolder Boulder is so large that they do not break the racers into age groups, but by actual age. I felt that this would be a great opportunity to see what age, ran the fastest average time in the men’s citizens’ race.

The 20 year olds took the prize with an average time of 59:32, followed by the 19 and 30 year olds. One “problem” with the Bolder Boulder is that the race attracts a lot of non-runners, aka people who take over two hours to complete a 10k, this in of itself could probably skew the results for the older runners, as the 30+ year old age group has higher participation rates. If you notice the 30 and 31 year old age groups together have more runners than the 18, 19, & 20, year old age groups combined and, those five represent the top five.

I imagine the Bolder Boulder is the furthest many of these race participants will run in 2008 and think if you did not run all year, but then did a 10k, my guess is that the 18, 19, or 20 year old version of yourself could defeat the present day version of yourself.

Oh, I apologize for not posting a median time. Unfortunately when I dump that data into a pivot table (excel) it does not give me the option of median. I could figure it out, but I’m not interested in doing the added work, sorry.
