Fans on the Field 10k 2008

I ventured over to the Fans on the Field 10k this morning, for the final tune up before the Denver Marathon taper. It was a big race, I was surprised at how many people were there, 1,006 in the 10k alone. Before the start of the race, I was a bit lethargic, as I did my final long run yesterday of 22 miles.

My friend Chai was also running and I probably consider him my “rival” being that we are similar speed, but he has gotten the better of me in 2008, as I am 0-3 against him! Thus, I have to say it’s a lop sided rival lately and he got the better of me again today. He overtook me with about a mile to go and I could not react. Well done Chai!

The start of the race was really confusing, I was standing about ten feet from the starting line and the other faster runners were also standing around, chatting, when the horn was blown. No one was even toeing the line, but luckily they had chip timing start/finish so it wasn’t a huge deal. But it took everyone by surprise.

The course was not conducive to a fast time, most of the race was run on the Platte River Trail, but then you had to go up on sidewalks once the runners went downtown, in addition there were a few U turns and a log jam in the Pepsi Center when the 5k/10k runnners merged.

Even though it was not a fast course it was a lot of fun, getting to run through Coors Field, Pepsi Center and Invesco Field was a blast. I didn’t run that fast but was satisfied with my performance. I really tuckered out with about a mile and half to go, I just couldn’t keep the pace, not sure what my problem was.

I finished in 38:35. Now it’s time for the taper, to get ready for the race that I have been training for, the Denver Marathon.
