Rocky Mountain Virtual 1/2 Marathon

The Rocky Mountain Half Marathon is teaming up with MapMyRun to introduce the Rocky Mountain Virtual 1/2 Marathon.

It’s an interesting idea and honestly I am not sure what to think. To register you have to pay full registration price, which is $65/$75, thus it’s not cheap. Runners participating in the Virtual 1/2 Marathon will receive a race t-shirt and goody bag and a medal, but they are not eligible for awards.

I’m also not sure if they are eligible for awards, I couldn’t find anything about that.

Even if participation numbers are low, it’s probably a solid marketing campaign. I doubt that the cost are that high, thus if it gets people talking, it is effective advertising for the race. I also wonder if they will be doing this for the Denver Marathon?

So would you pay $65 to run a virtual race?

  1. So let me get this straight. You pay $65 for a T-shirt and goody bag ($10-15 value), and then get to run an unassisted 13.1 miles somewhere local to you with no competition to run against. Absurd!

If this gets more than 10 entries, I would be highly surprised. There is simply no value, nada, none.

If I wanted to participate in something as silly as this, I would do it without registering. That way I would save my closet from yet another race T-shirt and my bank account from a $65 hit.

    Am I missing something?

  2. I don’t even understand what this means…like at all. You run it by yourself? Is that the deal?

So, can you run in the middle of the street? Can I pick my finish time? 1:25 sounds nice….

  3. Well they have Rocky Mountain Half Marathon but you can also sign up to run a virtual race, say you don’t live in Colorado.

Then you upload your time/data into mapmyrun, thus your time and distance have to be 13.1 miles.

Then your time is compared to people who ran the race.

  4. yup that was me! We hired a marketing agency in that building. I work in 14th and wazee

  5. Yet another way people are attempting to water-down the competitive aspect of the sport while making a buck off of it. One word comes to mind: lame.
